You’re at a restaurant with your date and the check comes, neither of you immediately reach for the bill. What do you do? Or lets say that your date can’t stop bad-mouthing their ex. Do you tell them to stop or do you listen to them rant for a whole hour more? Everyone has had an awkward experience dating and unfortunately these situations are far too common. While dating, hope for the best and plan for the worst. Premeditation of solving these dating atrocities is better than being caught off guard. Let’s look at some of the more frequent situations that may arise while casually dating from the examples given above:
You expect your date to pay. The bill comes and neither of you has even glanced at the waiter to confirm that you’ll take the check. Here’s the rule, if you’re going by tradition and chivalry, the man pays. If you’re the man, you should NEVER ask her to pay the whole bill. If you’re broke
A. You probably shouldn’t being going out and
B. Worst case scenario, you can ask to split it. When you and your female date to split the bill, there is a good chance there will be NO date number two. If you’re the female and your male date asks you to split the check, kindly agree and don’t fight it. You can decide after the date if that bothered enough that you could not fathom going on a second date.
Your date talks badly about friends, family or Exes. No one likes a negative nancy! The first few dates, you want to make sure that you’re on your best behavior. If your date starts bashing her mother for being crazy or bashing her Ex husband for being a negligent father, ignore her. Or perhaps your male date sees a “friend” while you’re at dinner who comes up to talk to you and he proceeds to talk bad about him after he walks away. This is a dating penalty flag! The best thing to do in this situation is to ignore their comments and seem uninterested. If you given them your full focus while they’re ranting, it will fuel the fire. Remember, bad behavior should never be rewarded.
They want to have the “kids” talk on the first date. Whoa, pump the brakes! This especially happens in your 30’s and 40’s. People feel rushed to have kids at this point and dating turns into an interview for the best egg or sperm donor. If they bring it up or casually tip toe around the question, remind them that it’s the first date and you would like to get to know them before you have that talk. If that doesn’t ease the situation and it’s still being pressed, you know that the two of you are in different places.
Your date is a LOUD TALKER. You’re at a nice quiet restaurant and your date insists on talking like you’re at a concert. This situation is one of the worst because if you ask them to quiet down, the majority of the time it’s going to come off rude. Here’s a solution; If you like them, next date take them somewhere that’s a more their speed. Some examples may be a park, bar/restaurant, or something active. Some people can’t help themselves so if it’s less stressfull for you to take your date somewhere where loud talking isn’t frowned upon, do it! If you still can’t stand the volume of their voice, it seems you have made your decision.
He/She looks nothing like their profile picture online (and not in a good way). Just as awkward as the LOUD TALKER, you can’t really tell you date they look completely different from what they had portrayed in their pictures. Lets say your date has gained about 50 lbs from the last time they uploaded a picture and failed to mention that before you meet for your date. They’re looking straight at you so it’s too late to run, what do you do? The best advice is to see where the date goes. If weight is the issue, that can always change. If it’s something major, that’s a completely different story. If you are more thrown off by the fact that they avoided telling you that they have changed since they took their last picture, you can always ask politely. That would sound a little something like this: “You looks great but you look a little different from the pictures i saw online.” See if that allows them to come clean about the deception. If not, it’s in your hands if the date two will happen.
Awkward dating moments are bound to happen so prepare yourself for any uncomfortable situation that could arise!
